MIT CSHub Carbon Uptake Webinar

Please join us Thursday, May 11th at 11 am EST as Deputy Director Hessam AzariJafari leads a presentation of a new CSHub framework for modelling the lifetime CO2 uptake of cement-based products nationally. We look forward to welcoming you and your questions.

To achieve carbon neutrality, it is essential to avoid, reduce and neutralize the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the life cycle of construction products. With cement-based products, such as concretes and mortars, that neutralization solution can occur through a unique mechanism.
These products naturally sequester CO2 during their lifetime and after being demolished. While it is known that cement-based products are capable of carbon uptake, it may be difficult to estimate how much CO2 can be sequestered. In this webinar, we introduce the CSHub framework for modeling the lifetime CO2 uptake of cement-based products at the national scale.
The framework was applied to a case study of U.S. cement consumption for different end-use applications. Our analysis, which is based on cement consumption since 1940, shows the significant contribution of carbon uptake in neutralizing cement production emissions.
