ACI BC Chapter 2018 Annual Spring Seminar & Trade Show
The focus of the 2018 Annual ACI BC Chapter Spring Seminar is on the sustainable concepts in concrete. This one-day seminar will feature five speakers from the industry who will share their perspectives on this topic.
As well as being informative and educational, the ACI Spring Seminar is an excellent opportunity to network with others in the concrete design and construction community. A trade show will be held to give you access to vendors active in the local industry. New to this year will also include an exterior trade show area where vendors can demonstrate their products.

Demand a Recount – Carbon Sequestration in forest Based Wood Products
Marketing wood-based building products as low-carbon alternatives is based on the core idea that wood-based products act as sequesters for atmospheric carbon in the built environment – rather than emitters as in the production of concrete or steel. This is gaining worldwide acceptance in all construction sectors. An overview of the life cycle of wood products beginning with logging and ending in its disposal as presented by Brent Taylor, will highlight the issues with this sequestration story.
Brent is a Research and Communications Consultant whose expertise lies in Carbon Accounting in building products, and the built environment. He is currently researching Carbon Sequestration in wood building products. Brent has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science.

Sustainability Development of the Cement Industry and Concrete Construction
Concrete plays an important role in minimizing the impacts on our built civilization by providing social, environmental and economic benefits, which equates to a favorable SROI (Sustainable Return on Investment). Julie Buffenbarger, FACI, LEED AP BC+D will discuss the current state of the ACI 130 Sustainability of Concrete Guidance documents under development. The documents consist of two volumes: “The Role of Materials in Sustainable Concrete Construction” and a “Guidance Manual for Sustainable Concrete Construction for Practitioners.” The materials guide is close to publication and the guidance manual will soon follow, both are written for the design community. The Materials document discusses multiple systems and materials for concrete and construction. The Guidance document encompasses climate change and resilience, design- , construction- , and use-phases, end of service life, codes, rating systems and tools.
Julie Buffenbarger, FACI, LEED™ AP BD+C, serves as Senior Scientist & Sustainability Principal for Beton Consulting Engineers, LLC. Julie received the 2015 Concrete Sustainability Award in recognition of her leadership in concrete sustainability and resilience, her guidance as Chair of ACI 130 – Sustainability of Concrete and Concrete Joint Sustainability Committees, and her tireless efforts to educate and contribute to sustainable and resilient concrete construction in the building and infrastructure segments. She has over 25 years’ experience in concrete construction marketing and research and has authored over 50+ publications. Her current research interests include cementitious and supplementary cementitious materials, durability and transport properties of concrete, and life cycle modelling. She holds Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio.

Build with Strength – How Concrete Helps with a Sustainable Future
An initiative of the NRMCA, Build With Strength embraces the importance of quality tools and the usefulness of measurement in quantifying results. Build With Strength is a promotion program with a particular focus on building relationships with specifiers to support and educate them about new sustainable concrete applications and their safety, resilience and long-term value. Presenter Tien Peng will provide an overview of the program’s promotional tools, resources, and training for our industry.
Tien Peng is the US-based NRMCA’s Vice President of Sustainability and Building Codes. He leads international efforts to improve codes, standards and sustainability protocols. He is a member of the ASTM Sustainability Committee and Green Globes consensus body. He served as a member of the US Green Building Council’s LEED homes committee and co-authored “Concrete Building Systems: Disaster Resilient Solutions for Safer Communities” published in the Homeland Security review. Tien holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Houston and a B.E in Mechanical Engineering.

ACI 122 Thermal Properties of Concrete – The ICF Perspective
As emerging building codes continue to drive toward higher levels of building thermal performance and resiliency, concrete is once again able to provide cost-effective solutions to builders and building owners. Designs incorporating reinforced concrete, built with Insulating Concrete Forms, are now recognized as meeting and exceeding the most stringent thermal and structural requirements. Recent research helps to detail the critical elements common to every concrete building plan. Douglas Bennion will summarize a joint research project undertaken by the Province of BC and a consortium of ICF manufacturers, beginning in 2014 and concluding in 2016. The objective was to evaluate the methods and materials used to construct ICF walls and their ability to control both air and water infiltration. Findings were key elements in support of a revision of BC Housing Corporation’s “Building Envelope Guide for Houses”, scheduled for release in 2018.
Douglas Bennion has nearly three decades in the development of Insulating Concrete Form products and markets. He heads the technical and training department for an international ICF and building products manufacturer. Douglas sits on multiple building code advisory bodies, chairs the ICF promotion committee for Concrete BC, and is a regular speaker at industry conferences.

CO2 and Concrete – Capturing Harmful Waste and Profits
Capturing carbon and using it in Ready Mix Production is a new technology that enables ready mix manufacturing to reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete they produce, by upcycling carbon dioxide into ready-mixed concrete products. “Upcycling” means collecting carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial emitters and injecting it into fresh ready mixed concrete. The upcycling of carbon dioxide into concrete occurs through a reaction between the cement and carbon dioxide, allowing a portion of strength gain without the use of cement. Robert Niven developed this technology and will explain how this works, and how it is deployed in the manufacturing process.
Robert Nivian is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of cleantech developer CarbonCure Technologies, receiving awards such as Canada’s Top 40 under 40 and the 2016 Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award. He has earned a reputation for uncovering innovative ways to lower greenhouse gases and improve the material performance of concrete. Roberts holds an MSc in Environmental Engineering and BSc in Chemistry
